We all know that in order to make changes and grow as person we have to move out of our comfort zones sometimes. Comfort zones are safe places, which are predictable, and easy so it can be challenging, scary even to move away from that place and do something differently. Just recently I challenged myself by doing something different and unfamiliar and something that I thought I wasn’t good at.
I went to Bali to attend an Art and Yoga retreat. No it wasn’t travelling to Bali alone that was challenging. I have done that many times before. It also wasn’t daily yoga classes that scared me, I love yoga. What really challenged me and took me way out of my comfort zone was the Art classes. I hadn’t done any Art since High school, which was a very long time ago, and I knew that I was absolutely useless at drawing.
One of the results of moving out of my comfort zone was that once I had pushed myself to be uncomfortable, it wasn’t as intimidating as I had anticipated. I accepted and was OK with the fact that I am not perfect (and that I am no artist)!
Try these 3 strategies to help move out of your comfort zone.
1. Challenge yourself with small activities. And remind yourself that some of the best things happen outside of your comfort zone. What challenges you, can also help you grow.
2. View the experience as a learning experience. What did it teach you about you? How would you do it differently next time?
3. Coach yourself. Ask yourself these questions: What is the worst that could happen? Could I survive it? What is the best that could happen?
Sometimes it is not easy to identify what it is that is keeping us in our comfort zone.
