Do you want to go back to your old job when this is over?
Updated: May 10, 2021
I don't need to tell you that we are living in very uncertain times. How are you coping?
This COVID-19 crisis has radically changed our lives. Just a few months ago, we had no idea our 'world' would be confined to our homes!
Our lives have been turned upside down and we have had to adapt to new circumstances very quickly.
All aspects of our lives have changed. In the work environment lots of people have lost their jobs, many are adapting to working at home and many more are on the front line putting their lives at risk to keep the rest of us safe.
A question that everyone is asking is “When will this end?”
And, of course no one knows the answer to that with any certainty. But what does seem certain is that we will never return completely to the lives we had before. Not only will this experience have changed us as individuals, it will certainly change the way we work.
Many countries have been or are still are in various versions of lockdown. This has given us time to escape from the outward busyness of our previous life and the space to reflect on what is important to us. To reflect on what was and wasn’t working in our life and career and to dream bigger.
So, what is important to you now?
Do you agree that this crisis is a powerful reminder of how important freedom is - and how much we need human connection?
I am sure that either what is important to you has changed or that you have been able to reconnect with something that you have been avoiding for a long time. Now that you have pressed the reset button you have the opportunity to start again.
When this is all over, will your old job be available?
Do you even want to go back to your old job when this is over?
If you are lucky enough to still have a job and have been working from home, how are you enjoying that experience? Is working from home something that you would like to do going forward? Do you enjoy the freedom to do things more ‘your way’ or do you miss the incidental social interaction that your work environment provides? Would you like to say ‘goodbye’ to the daily commute to work or would you prefer to do your work outside of your home? There is no one size fits all option but seems likely there will be more work from opportunities as a result of this crisis.
For me, my own experiences of the last weeks have cemented my desire to work from home completely. I enjoy the freedom and flexibility of working from home and as an introvert enjoy my own space, I think now is the right time for me to make the move to full time work from home/self-employment.
So, whether you were thinking about changing careers way before coronavirus hit or whether your experiences of the last few weeks have been the catalyst for change, there is no doubt that this would be a great time to make that move. And if you start that process now you will have a head start over everybody else.
